Arrivé 2023 CABERNET SAUVIGNON Napa Valley

In 2023 Napa Valley experienced one of the longest growing seasons in a decade or more. With consistent, mild weather throughout the season, above-average crop yields, and extended hang time, 2023 is an exceptional, high-quality, memorable vintage. Winter and spring rains led to full reservoirs and healthy, saturated soils; ideal conditions as grape growers headed into bud break. The mild, warm summer weather (72-75 degrees F) supported healthy canopy growth through bloom and set. Though vineyards faced mildew pressure, clusters remained loose for good air flow. Relatively cool weather throughout the growing season in tandem with an abundance of sunshine allowed grape skins to ripen slowly and develop maximal dark red color components for red wines. Harvest kicked off around Labor Day weekend (September 2-4, 2023) for white wine grapes; Cabernet Sauvignon harvest started the end of September / early-October; all picks wrapped up by mid-November. Vintners relished the long harvest season, which provided extended hang time to develop flavors. For red wines, full ripeness of grape skins and seeds provided the building blocks for a tannic backbone which is the source of resilience for a long-lived wine. Winemakers describe the wines as having freshness, purity and elegance overall.

You'll know when you have Arrivéd

The valley floor of Napa Valley, stretching between the Vaca and Mayacamas mountain ranges, is characterized by its deep, fertile, and often well-drained alluvial soils. These soils, deposited over millennia by the Napa River and its tributaries, are generally richer in organic matter than the leaner soils of the surrounding hillsides. This richness, combined with the valley floor's relatively warmer temperatures and consistent access to water (either naturally or through irrigation), allows Cabernet Sauvignon vines to thrive with vigor. The abundant nutrients and moisture contribute to larger berries and a more generous canopy, leading to a higher yield. This results in wines that are often described as "lush" and "wonderful" due to their opulent fruit character, softer tannins, and a more approachable structure in their youth, compared to the more concentrated and tannic wines typically produced from hillside fruit. The ample resources available to the vines on the valley floor support the development of significant body and a smooth, velvety texture in the resulting Cabernet Sauvignon.

Atlas Peak, perched high on the Vaca Mountains above the Napa Valley floor, offers a distinct terroir ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. Its vineyards benefit from higher elevation, putting them mostly above the fog line and allowing for more direct sun exposure. However, the cooler mountain temperatures and significant diurnal shifts (warm days, cool nights) extend the ripening period, helping the grapes develop intense flavors and complexity while retaining crucial acidity. The thin, rocky, and well-drained volcanic soils, often reddish in color, stress the vines, leading to smaller berries with concentrated flavors and robust tannins—characteristics that define the powerful, structured, and age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignons from this esteemed AVA.
